HERITAGE SUPPORT SPECIALIST

SUMMARY OF POSITION

4Culture is hiring a Heritage Support Specialist. This position exists to support the growth and evolution of King County’s heritage field within the framework of the 4Culture’s Heritage program. The Heritage Support Specialist will provide administrative support for all the work of the Heritage program with an emphasis on coordinating the grantmaking process and collaborating with strategic partners to implement field services activities. 4Culture’s field services activities are partnership-based initiatives that support professional development and innovation in the heritage field. The Heritage Support Specialist is currently vacant and the successful candidate will begin working in winter 2018.

The organization’s four program areas—Arts, Heritage, Historic Preservation, and Public Art—put public resources to use all over King County. 4Culture is an independent public agency, chartered under state law and King County ordinance in January 2003, after thirty-five years as the King County Office of Cultural Resources, to provide cultural services to King County residents and visitors. The ideal candidate for this position champions public support for arts and culture and has demonstrated commitment to and experience with advancing racial equity and social justice.

4Culture's Program Areas Include:

Arts funds individual artists, artist groups, and arts organizations that provide access to art experiences for all King County residents and visitors.
Heritage helps communities recognize, preserve, and explore our shared heritage—in all the places where the past meets the present.
Preservation supports the protection and stewardship of historic places.
Public Art commissions and collects for the King County Public Art Collection, bringing artists’ thinking to the spaces we share and offering consulting to the region.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborate with local and regional community representatives, heritage specialists, heritage organizations, and fellow 4Culture staff to coordinate field services activities that support the heritage sector growth and evolution. Current activities include but are not limited to:
    • Field services webpage
    • Rural Heritage Internship program
    • T.I.P.S. Mini-grant program
    • Volunteer Recruitment pilot program
    • Conference attendance stipends
  • Assist with administration of Heritage program's funding application review process, including responding to applicant questions, reviewing applications, assembling review panel information, scheduling panel meetings, and recording panel comments.
  • Assist Heritage Lead with cultivating new and maintaining existing strategic partners (i.e. Association of King County Historical Organizations, Washington Museums Association) to support field services activities.
  • Serve as support staff for 4Culture Heritage Advisory Committee, including preparing meeting notifications, minutes, agendas, handout materials, and refreshments.
  • Assist with evaluation of internal programs and assessment of King County heritage field.
  • Assist Heritage Lead with cultivating new and maintaining existing strategic partners to support field services activities.
  • Assist Heritage Lead in broadening the pool of heritage organizations and practitioners who apply for and receive support from 4Culture, in alignment with its racial equity initiative.
  • Identify, research, and develop innovative and timely content about the heritage field for marketing/communications needs.
  • Contribute to the overall health and welfare of 4Culture by participating on internal committees and meetings that address cross-departmental issues—for example, monthly racial equity team gatherings.
  • Assist with coordination of On-Site Reviews for Heritage program-funded organizations.
  • Represent Heritage 4Culture at applicable local, state, regional, and national events, meetings, and conferences.
  • Arrange logistics for internal and external meetings for Heritage program.
  • Maintain digital image library and Resource Room reference material.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in nonprofit or public administration, museum studies, history, historic preservation, archaeology, or related field and at least two years working with museums or cultural organizations are the minimum requirements for this position. Equivalent qualifications include at least 4 years work experience with nonprofit or public administration, history museums, historical societies, historic preservation, archaeology, or related fields. The most successful applicants will have enthusiasm for advancing the cause of heritage and knowledge of the history and cultural resources in King County and the Northwest.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to work directly and empathetically with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated high level of initiative.
  • Understanding of best practices in museums and heritage-based organizations.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of cultural workers, including paid staff, informal community groups, and volunteers.
  • Strong skills in creative problem solving.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and experience working with digital databases.
  • Knowledge of the history and cultural resources in King County and the Northwest.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Work location is 4Culture offices at 101 Prefontaine Place S, Seattle, with fieldwork throughout King County.
  • Position works a 37.5 hour week, Monday-Friday. Occasional early morning, evening and/or weekend hours are required.
  • Position reports to the 4Culture Heritage Lead, and works collaboratively with other 4Culture staff.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $45,845.24 - $58,110.73, depending on experience and includes a competitive package of benefits, including participation in the WA State Retirement System, and is classified as Regular Full Time, Exempt.
