The Center’s internship program was funded in part by a grant from the Tucker Foundation through the S.K. Johnston, Jr. Family Fund of the Wyoming Community Foundation. We thank them for their support!

Purpose of Internship Program

The Center’s summer internship program provides opportunities for students who want to gain practical museum experience, and to assist students in the development of new or expanded applications for their academic and professional interests.

The internship program offers students hands-on involvement with the museum profession in a manner that cannot be duplicated in the classroom or through textbooks. These experiences may result in graduate theses and dissertations, and assist students in defining their career goals. Interns become aware of the professional practices and ethics of a workplace environment.

Internship Information

Internships are full-time positions that are usually ten (10) weeks in length. Interns are paid $12.50 per hour for forty hours per week.

Our Conservation Department also offers learning opportunities through our Conservation Internship Program. Visit this page or e-mail Beverly Perkins for more information.

Qualified upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students who are enrolled in colleges and universities are eligible to apply. We also select recent graduates who are actively obtaining work experience.

Application Procedures

Students interested in summer internships must submit the online application form, including an uploaded cover letter, résumé, and a current/recent transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). We ask that ALL MATERIALS be submitted together in one application form. The next step in the selection process for finalists will be a phone or Skype interview. References will be requested of finalists.

Candidates may apply for one or two internships. Each internship requires a separate application form, but not duplicates of other documents.

Wages and Housing

For funded positions, interns receive a wage of $12.50 per hour, based on a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week.

Housing is the responsibility of the intern. The Center can give you a few suggestions based on where interns found housing the previous year. However, please note that most housing options involve sharing space with others—such as in a dormitory or a rented room. Few interns find their own furnished apartment unless the intern has a very large budget. Most interns have been able to locate housing at rental rates of $400 – $800 per month, depending on the type of accommodations desired.
