Reporting to the Natural Resources Community Liaison Managers and guided by the Alameda or Peninsula Watershed Management Plans and their respective Interpretive and/or Educational Master Plans, the Watershed Education and Volunteer Program Coordinators plan, implement, coordinate, supervise and lead engaging educational, recreational, and volunteer programs and activities that foster an appreciation and understanding of the importance of the natural, cultural and water delivery history of the watershed, natural resource conservation, and environmental stewardship.
San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Natural Resources and Lands Management Division, has two (2) vacancies, one based in the Alameda Creek Watershed and another based in the Peninsula Watershed.
1. About the Alameda Creek Watershed education and outreach programs:
The Alameda Creek Watershed Center (ACWC) is currently under construction on SFPUC property next to the town of Sunol, the Arroyo de la Laguna, and Alameda Creek. The property includes the historic Sunol Water Temple, the Sunol AgPark (an 18-acre organic farm that offers fieldtrips to 4-6th graders), and the Sunol Native Plant Nursery (that provides plants for the SFPUC’s watershed restoration projects).
The ACWC will partner with the Sunol AgPark and the Native Plant Nursery in providing programs for schools and the public and coordinating volunteer opportunities when it opens in 2022. The Alameda Creek Watershed includes 39,000 acres of protected SFPUC lands, part of the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System that provides water for 2.7 million people in the Bay Area.
The Alameda Creek Watershed incumbent will assist with the development and implementation the ACWC Education Master Plan, including school, field trip, and public programs at the ACWC, as well as coordinating its natural and cultural history programs with those in place at the AgPark. Incumbent will also develop a volunteer program for the ACWC, AgPark, and Native Plant Nursery.
Position priorities before the ACWC opens to the public in 2022:
• Assist ACWC management and contactors in developing and piloting programs for school students and visitors to the ACWC.
• Develop a volunteer program.
• Assist ACWC Manager with preparations for opening the ACWC, including hiring staff, developing outreach materials, procuring supplies and materials. Setting up cloud-based program registration and volunteer management systems.
• Work with the AgPark’s Education Coordinator to promote and provide the AgPark’s established in-school and field trip programs (or a modified program due to COVID-19 restrictions).
Position priorities after the ACWC opens:
• Implement and oversee programs for schools and the public
• Serve as the lead teacher for field trip programs
• Recruit and oversee volunteers for the various locations.
• Manage volunteers for the ACWC.
Work Schedule: When school programs are in session: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Monday – Friday, alternate hours may be possible between semesters. Once the watershed center opens, the schedule will change to include one or two weekend days instead of Monday and/or Tuesday and including occasional evenings.

2. About the Peninsula Watershed environmental education and outreach program:
The San Francisco Peninsula Watershed includes 23,000 acres of SFPUC lands. There are five SFPUC reservoirs and associated appurtenances along with other public utilities (PG&E, AT&T, local County Water Districts etc.). The watershed is protected and closed to public access except in areas approved for recreational access. 10 miles of trails are open to the public by reservation. San Mateo County Parks manages the 25-mile Crystal Springs Regional trail. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area manages 3 miles of trail on the Watershed. Six miles of additional SFPUC trail have been planned and will be constructed in 2021/2022. Trail leader Volunteers lead multi-modal trail events on the Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail. Volunteer docents knowledgeable in the natural and cultural history of the Peninsula Watershed implement the Watershed Interpretive Master Plan. The Interpretive Master Plan is an overarching document which will provide guidance and specific interpretive activities associated with the Fifield Cahill Ridge trail program, the new 6-mile Southern Extension of the Ridge Trail and the Watershed overall. The Division also provides and intends to expand volunteer work projects focused on environmental resource related projects and citizen science activities.
The Peninsula Watershed incumbent is responsible for managing the Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail Program, the watershed education and outreach program through implementation of the Peninsula Watershed Interpretive Master Plan, the Watershed Volunteer Program and supporting the Watershed Community Liaison who will supervise the position.
Work Schedule: 8 AM - 5 PM, Tuesday – through Saturday.

• Work with manager, staff and others as needed to plan , develop, implement, teach and supervise the delivery of youth and adult educational and recreational programs, and to develop, implement and oversee student and adult volunteer programs.
• Participates as a team member to support all areas of the education and volunteer program. Duties include teaching programs and/or working with youth and adult volunteers in the field and assisting with department activities and events. Programs planned for assigned location may include : school field trips, in-school, virtual, and service-learning programs, trail interpretation, recreational access programs and/or educational workshops and events for children and/or adults.
• Work with managers, staff and coordinators of other activities in the watershed to identify needs and opportunities for the utilization of volunteers, ensure that individual and group volunteers assigned to the various activities address and meet those needs, and that each volunteer is engaged in meaningful work.
• Recruit, screen and supervise the training and retention of a team of part-time and seasonal education staff, interns, and volunteers. Coordinate, schedule, monitor & evaluate their work to assure maximum program coverage & effectiveness. Ensure that departmental procedures are followed. Handle public inquiries and any internal problem situations that may arise involving programs, volunteers, or staff.
• Provide orientation and training classes that include: SFPUC and program mission and goals, policies and procedures, applicable laws, and best practices for interpretive programs, techniques for working with under-served students and communicating effectively with visitors from other cultures, language groups, abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Assess staff and volunteer productivity, set goals and establish work-related priorities, ensure teachers meet program standards. Recommend and implement program policies and procedures for assigned program & ensure all activities follow health & safety protocols. Assists manager with developing, monitoring, and administering program budget.
• Oversee all program, teachers and volunteer, scheduling and logistics using cloud-based software applications for program registrations and volunteer management. Collect data, maintain and manage records to produce annual reports.
• Work with department staff to publicize and promote all programs, in person, in print, on the internet, including social media platforms. Prepare program information for department websites. Provide presentations for local groups, schools and civic organizations; tours for visiting professionals, the media and members of the public. Develop partnerships with other organizations and maintain contacts and relationships with schools, community and corporate groups, program partners, and SFPUC staff.
• Order and maintain program supplies, tools, and equipment. Alameda Watershed position: oversee maintenance of student garden, classrooms, student lab, field study sites, and storage areas. Peninsula Watershed position: oversee maintenance of trails, field study sites, and storage areas.
Class 3374 - Watershed Education and Volunteer Program Coordinator performs other related duties as required.
Nature of Work
Position will require work on weekends and some evenings, and sustained physical effort, such as standing or walking for prolonged periods. Portion of the work duties will be outdoors which will expose the incumbent to inclement weather and potential hazards common in a wilderness environment or natural landscape setting such as rugged terrain, heat, wind, rain, rattlesnakes. Ability to hike 5 miles over rugged terrain and lift 25 pounds is required for the Peninsula Incumbent.

1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; AND
2. One (1) year (2000 hours) of experience supervising, coordinating or directing volunteer services and/or community outreach services in an organization which provides services to the public. AND
3. Possession of a Valid California Driver’s license.
Substitution: Additional experience supervising, coordinating or directing volunteer and/or community relations services, as described above, may be substituted for up to two years of the required baccalaureate degree on a year-for-year basis.

• Possession of a baccalaureate degree in environmental education, interpretation, field Biology, natural resources, environmental studies, wildlife management, park management, outdoor recreation or related field.
• Experience providing environmental education, agricultural education/training, natural history interpretation or similar programs, preferably in an outdoor setting.
• Experience working with youth and adult volunteers for an educational organization, such as a museums or outdoor programs.
• Experience working with underserved communities, English as a second language (ESL), including children, in a group setting.
• Fluency in Spanish.
• Experience with online programs and volunteer registration platforms.
• Certification in interpretation programs, such as NAI (National Association of Interpretation).
• Certification or ability to become certified in CPR and basic first aid.
