Job Description: 

Church History Museum Purpose: The Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seeks an experienced leader for a high-visibility role as director of the Church History Museum in Salt Lake City. The Church History Museum provides opportunities for patrons to connect to the history of the Church and the growing spiritual, artistic, and cultural legacies of the Latter-day Saints. Description
 

 

Objectives:

  • Lead a team that collects, preserves, catalogs, researches, and exhibits art and artifacts that enable the sharing of an open and authentic story of the Latter-day Saints
  • Provide meaningful patron experiences via engaging exhibitions, quality educational programming, and best practice interpretive planning
  • Maintain a vibrant team of staff, docents, and volunteers
  • Foster positive relationships with artists, donors, and partners
  • Make more of the museum’s art and artifacts, exhibitions, and programs available to more people through modern technology and dynamic partnerships
  • Provide an opportunity for patrons to purchase items from the museum store as a reminder of the heritage of faith they witnessed

 

Responsibilities
 

 

  • Lead day-to-day operations with a team of about 20 staff and 250 volunteers
  • Develop strategic vision, plans, and goals
  • Direct the curatorial, exhibition, education, public programming, and collections management functions
  • Recruit, hire, retain, and build the capability of a diverse and high-performing team
  • Manage budgets and oversee all financial aspects
  • Initiate and maintain efficient museum processes
  • Contribute to department-wide, cross-department and campus-wide efforts
  • Act as liaison with outside institutions and partners

 

Qualifications
 

 

  • One or more advanced degrees in museum studies, history, art history, archival studies, public history, public administration, business or a related field; plus at least 8-10 years of related professional experience, including managing and developing teams and large complex projects
  • Experience with public history projects and programming; involvement in museum exhibit development a plus
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and team building skills
  • Experience in reporting complex issues to high-level executives
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities
  • Flexible, adaptable, and innovative
  • Proficient knowledge of the history and art of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a plus
  • Must be a temple-worthy member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
