Position: Communications Specialist
Location: Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington, USA
The Whale Museum is seeking a Communications Specialist.  Year-round, Part-Time, includes benefits. 
Established in 1976 as the first U.S. museum dedicated to whales living in the wild, The Whale Museum promotes stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. The main focus of our work are the endangered Southern Resident killer whales but there are other marine mammal species of importance in our region, including Transient killer whales, Minke whales, Humpback whales, Harbor porpoise, Dall’s porpoise, Harbor seals, Steller sea lions, and other cetacean and pinniped species.   Since 1979, the museum’s doors have been opened to the public with an average of 34,000 visitors per year.  Additionally, the museum offers educational programs and tours; connects people to the Southern Resident Orcas through the Orca Adoption Program; provides education on responsible viewing of marine mammals in the wild through the Soundwatch On-the-Water Boater Education Program and Kayaker Education & Leadership Program; operates the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network; keeps the Marine Mammal Sightings Database; manages the SeaSound hydrophone network at Lime Kiln; and more.
The Communications Specialist is expected to oversee all aspects of The Whale Museum’s Communications with three main focal areas: (1) Graphics design, including brochures, exhibits, newsletter, and all other printed materials; (2) Website design/management, including maintaining current website while transitioning to (and building) new website; and (3)  Press and Social Media outreach and management. Additional responsibilities: development and management of photo/video collection; and other related duties as assigned. The Communications Specialist reports to the Executive Director and works cooperatively with all members of the staff.
The successful candidate will: have 3¬ years+ experience in graphics/web design; be well-versed in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium; have exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a strong command of English grammar and punctuation as well as excellent editing skills; have strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects, priorities and deadlines with minimal supervision; have great attention to detail; have a consistently positive attitude and professional demeanor; have tact and judgment in dealing with a variety of internal and external colleagues; and be highly motivated, self starter who takes initiative and is curious, conscientious, solution oriented, innovative, creative, and a confident thinker.  The successful candidate will be able to work occasional holidays, nights and weekends; and possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and working vehicle appropriate for business.  Primary functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; speaking in public; occasional travel; and ability to lift/manage 50 pounds (exhibit booth, boxes, etc.).  A varied skill set and flexibility are major assets. Familiarity with the Pacific Northwest environment, Salish Sea ecosystem and its inhabitants are a plus; emphasis is placed on knowledge of the federally-listed endangered community of Southern Resident Orcas, the threats they face and efforts underway to help them recover. The successful candidate will follow governmental mandates related to COVID-19 and is fully vaccinated. Salary ($20.00-$22.00/hour) varies based on experience.
