The Director of Education and Community Partnerships is a newly created, senior level management position reporting to the Director/CEO. The position is responsible for strategic oversight and management of all aspects of the Education Department, including programs for youth & families, schools & educators, Creative Aging programs, and the general public. The position works within the regional and national educational and creative spheres to expand the Museum’s outreach by building relationships and forging productive partnerships, in order to promote the Museum and arts education generally, as well as to foster a more diverse and inclusive community.
Department Staff and Budgetary Management (60%)
- Lead and inspire a diverse team of museum educators and volunteer Gallery Guides in the development and delivery of educational programming that aligns with the Museum’s mission and vision.
- Manage departmental budget in accordance with established goals and metrics. Coordinate with all departments to determine and manage Education priorities of this budget
- Work effectively in a cross-departmental environment to develop innovative, efficient, and more integrated ways to bring the Museum and its exhibitions and programs to the attention of the community and supporters
- Provide management and oversight for departmental program and event coordination, planning, and execution
- Work collaboratively to ensure cross-departmental production deadlines are achieved
- Engage in ongoing evaluation and assessment of Education programs, including data collection, analysis, and reporting
Community Partnerships (40%)
- Promote the Museum’s mission and vision through pursuing and developing innovative and strategic community outreach opportunities
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key education stakeholders in the region and nationally
- Develop and strengthen partnerships with schools, creative organizations, academic institutions, artists, and leaders in the educational, museum, and relevant fields
- Collaborate with the Deputy Director for Development to identify and cultivate funding sources and prepare proposals
- Represent the Frye at programs and events throughout the community and at professional conferences
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Minimum 5 years in a related position with increasing responsibility including management of annual plan, budget, and supervision of department staff and volunteers
- Familiarity with current trends, issues, and best practices in museum education, including experience with curriculum design and implementation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to represent the Museum to external stakeholders with professionalism and enthusiasm
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills for building effective working relationships at all levels within the Museum and beyond, and the ability to foster a collaborative team environment
- A desire to make the Frye Art Museum and its onsite and offsite programs more inclusive and accessible to a wide range of audiences
- Demonstrated experience building organizational partnerships and engaging new audiences through community outreach
- Flexibility, energy, creativity, and adaptability to handle competing needs in a dynamic environment
- Master’s Degree in Museum Education, Museum Studies, or Art History preferred
Work areas are inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor event sites. Shift times may vary to meet the Museum's requirement to staff the facilities at all hours. Work may require long periods of sustained standing during Museum events.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- SITTING/STANDING/WALKING: Approximately 85% of time is spent seated while working at a desk. Balance of time (approximately 15%) is spent standing or moving around the work area. Ability to stand for extended periods of time when assisting at Museum events.
- SPEAKING/HEARING: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with the public and co-workers.
- LIFTING/CARRYING/PUSHING/PULLING: The ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds is necessary for moving material and equipment for events.
- VISION: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to effectively use the computer screens.
- STOOPING/KNEELING: The ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for accessing files.
- REACHING/HANDLING: Good manual dexterity is necessary for computer keyboard use and for retrieving and working with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
