The Registrar, Collections has a principal role in reimagining and implementing responsive registration methods that track to contemporary art practices, cross-departmental integrations, and the museum's dynamic art programs in ways that ensure the stewardship and accessibility of modern and contemporary art. They are a flexible, hands-on, creative problem-solver with in-depth knowledge and understanding of museum registration and collections care principles and practices. The Registrar, Collections trains, supports, and supervises a team of expert collections and loans out registrars in activities that are aligned with the museum’s strategic priorities and the goals of the Registration department and the Collections, Exhibitions and Design (CED) division. 
This position is an opportunity to hone leadership skills in advancing the museum's collecting, loans out, and exhibition programs. The Registrar, Collections works closely with senior-level staff members, as well as SFMOMA trustees and donors. 
Reporting to and working with the Director of Registration, the Registrar, Collections is a vital partner to colleagues in CED, Curatorial, Legal, Facilities and Operations, Security, Visitor Experience, and Education and Community Engagement in realizing integrated collections stewardship, collaborative collections and exhibitions research, and engaging and inspiring public programming.

The position’s primary work location is San Francisco, 151 3rd Street. The position will also work occasionally at the museum’s Collections Center in South San Francisco.

Key Responsibilities:
    • Lead the collections and outgoing loans registration teams in practices that reflect in-depth knowledge and understanding of advanced registration and collections care principles for modern and contemporary art. 

    • Support the Director of Registration in designing, delivering, and implementing new solutions for registration methods, policies, and procedures for accessions, loans out, and exhibitions.

    • Creatively develop and support effective and efficient collections and outgoing loan workflows; prioritize activities, assign projects, and adjust workloads as needed; ensure that collections and outgoing loans registrars have the resources they need.  

    • Provide direct support for the museum’s accessions, outgoing loans, and exhibition programs, including hands-on work needed to perform registration actions such as plan, manage, and document accessions and deaccessions, outgoing/incoming loans, rotations and exhibitions.
