POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Engagement Specialist implements the engagement strategies for JANM’s Discover Nikkei project in order to expand its global Nikkei network and promote the project’s content and initiatives. This position is responsible for social media postings, including assisting with the development of social media campaigns; ensuring that the content on DiscoverNikkei.org is current, relevant, and useful to the site’s target audiences; assisting with project programming; following up with inquiries; and assisting with site moderation. This position requires someone to be both fluent in English and either Spanish and/or Portuguese. 

This is a temporary, full-time position from April 8, 2024 to March 31, 2025, with a possible extension. Set weekly hours are required, but with some flexibility in scheduling.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for social media posts on all platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, etc), including scheduling daily posts, monitoring & moderating conversations, and encouraging users to participate the site activities and programs. Provide regular reports with engagement metrics.

2. Develop plans and implement social media/content strategy and campaigns to raise awareness of the project and its special initiatives/programs, and to expand its global Nikkei network by working closely with the team, other departments, and consulting firms, when available. 

3. Expand the project’s global network by identifying and contacting Nikkei and other individuals and organizations, focusing especially in Latin American countries, about contributing/participating, supporting, and promoting Discover Nikkei and its initiatives. Works with the team to strategize, contact, and follow up on potential partnerships, collaborations, and sponsorships for the project. This may include virtual and in-person meetings and presentations.

4. Coordinate the site’s curated content, with an emphasis on increasing content in Spanish and Portuguese; assist with the scheduling and uploading of daily articles and other curated content; recruit new contributors; and coordinate volunteer writing and translating assignments.

5. Monitors and responds to general inquiries and requests received by the project via email and other channels.

6. Work with the team and others to develop promotional and other materials, including mass outreach emails, event descriptions, announcements, flyers, articles, summaries, FAQs, general instructions, and reports as needed. 

7. Assist the team in planning and coordinating virtual and in-person events.

8. Provides support for users and potential users and monitors/moderates user-generated content/comments. Assists with site development by helping with testing and providing feedback.

9. Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by the Museum. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum-wide events per year: 

a) JANM’s Benefit & Online Auction—(off-site) typically held in the Spring (April-May) 

b) Oshogatsu Family Festival Day (1st Sunday in January)

c) Natsumatsuri Family Festival Day (Saturday in August)
