Overview

The Gallery Guide Supervisor is responsible for enhancing the museum experience for all visitors by providing a welcoming and friendly environment for visitors and helping people have a quality museum experience. The Gallery Guide Supervisor circulates throughout the OMCA galleries and actively provides museum information to visitors, addresses their inquiries, orients them to gallery exhibits and museum rules, assists staff with some museum programs and evaluation activities, assesses general condition of the galleries, and prepares reports to staff all to raise the level of engagement in the galleries and heighten the visitor's experience at the museum. The Gallery Guide Supervisor provides guidance for the rest of the team by leading by example, has back-of-house administrative duties and leads training new staff. The regular schedule is Wednesday to Sunday, 37.5 hours per week.

INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

 

  • Create a welcoming and friendly environment for visitors in the galleries by addressing their inquiries while roving through the galleries
  • Orient visitors to gallery exhibits and interactive elements as needed
  • Assist visitors in locating objects or exhibits of interest to them in the galleries
  • Inform visitors of gallery rules in a friendly and welcoming manner
  • Assist with public programs in the galleries and evaluation activities on an as needed basis
  • Assist with visitor flow during opening and closing
  • Assess the general condition of the galleries, including various exhibition-related technologies, to ensure standards are maintained
  • Ensure that activities and educational opportunities of patrons are consistent with maintenance of environment in which safety of collections and visitors is paramount
  • Prepare written reports on an as-needed basis regarding visitor experiences and behaviors or exhibit issues in the galleries
  • Create daily gallery guide schedule
  • Ensure weekly reports are sent
  • Conduct daily rounds to ensure gallery operating standards are met, including cleanliness and leadership of gallery guide team
  • Monitor and expedite opening procedures
  • Coordinate supply and technological needs for galleries
  • Coordinate logistical needs for daily activities and special events
  • Track and approve timecards for Gallery Guide team
  • Implement performance evaluation protocols with Gallery Guide team
  • Perform duties of a Gallery Guide as needed
  • Host daily morning meetings as assigned
  • Projects as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE

A combination of experience and education that demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge and abilities for this position is required as noted:

 

 

 

  • Ability to display and encourage visitor and internal customer service, take and share responsibility and treat others with respect
  • 3-5 years of related experience required

 

  • Knowledge of customer service practices
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and applications including proficiency with Macintosh or PC computer platforms
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of media and technology-based applications and strategies a plus
  • Interest in California, Art, History, Natural Sciences, or museum-related subjects
  • English language proficiency in both spoken and written form
  • A secondary language, such as Spanish or Chinese, is desired

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to the following:

 

 

  • Noise, such as groups of people working in enclosed areas
  • Standing for long periods of time
