The Museum Director assessment is now available through June 30, 2026! Take the first step towards a career as a Museum Director with the California Department of Parks and Recreation! This assessment qualifies candidates for any Museum Director position within California State Parks.
The California State Railroad Museum is recruiting for a vacant Museum Director position. To qualify, potential candidates must complete an assessment.
The California State Parks are caretakers for over 3,000 historic buildings, more than 11,000 known California Native American ancestral and historic archaeological sites, and multiple museums including the California State Railroad Museum, Hearst Castle, and Regional Indian Museums, including the State Indian Museum. We are seeking individuals who are passionate about developing community relationships, stewarding California State Parks’ rich and varied collections and material culture, interpreting our shared knowledge, and fostering educational opportunities. We are excited about the opportunity to reach candidates who bring diverse perspectives. The salary range for this position is $10,010 to $11,367 per month.
The minimum qualifications for the Museum Director assessment includes five years of broad and extensive administrative or management experience which includes responsibility for managing complex programs and projects, such as fiscal management, budgeting, personnel, long-range planning, fund raising, grant writing and management, marketing, public relations or program development.

On the left-hand toolbar, select “Application Templates (STD 678)”
On the Application Template page, click the “Create New Template” button - A blank application template will open
Complete all required fields in each section and be sure to include the following:
Exam Title: Museum Director and Exam Code: EX-5264
Step 3: Submit your application in CalCareers or email your application to Exams@parks.ca.gov with the Exam Code EX-5264 in the subject line
Step 4: After reviewing your application, the Exams Team will email you a link to take the online Assessment

About the Assessment
Completing this assessment is a requirement to become a California State Parks Museum Director. This means that to apply for any Museum Director position statewide, a candidate must first take the assessment. The exam is weighted 100% on a training and experience evaluation. Evaluation will be based on your knowledge, skills, and ability, as demonstrated by your education/experience.
