WMA 2022 Leadership Award Recipient

Congratulations to WMA's 2022 Leadership Award recipient Dr. John H. Falk!

This past October, more than 400 attendees gathered at WMA's 2022 Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon. After an afternoon filled with pre-conference tours and workshops, the first full-day of learning sessions and networking events started off early morning with the 2022 General Opening Session & Keynote.

Followed by opening remarks from WMA's Executive Director Jason B. Jones, WMA recognized the achievements of three unique museum professionals with this year's 2022 awards – the Charles Redd Center Award for Exhibition Excellence, the WMA Impact Award, and the WMA Leadership Award. Presented to a museum professional with more than 20 years in the field, the WMA Leadership Award recognizes and acknowledges the outstanding lifetime achievements of a museum professional with more than 20 years in the field, whose career has had a sustained, considerable, and lasting impact on museum practices and/or the museum profession in the Western Region.

Unable to join us in-person, this year's Leadership Award honoree was Dr. John H. Falk, founder of the Institute for Learning Innovation and Emeritus Sea Grant Professor of Free-Choice Learning at Oregon State University.

A leading expert on free-choice learning – the learning that occurs when people have significant choice and control over the what, where and when of their learning – Dr. Falk's current research focuses on understanding the well-being and identity/self-related reasons people utilize free-choice learning settings during their leisure time; as well as studying the community impacts of museums, libraries, zoos and aquariums and helping cultural institutions re-think their educational positioning in the 21st century.

Below, Dr. Falk addresses WMA's attendees and discusses the value of the work being done by everyone across the museum field today.
