Director of Development
Full-time, salaried, benefits-eligible
MOI is seeking an experienced, strategic Director of Development to lead and grow fundraising efforts supporting the museum’s mission, growth, and long-term sustainability. MOI is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a $2.5M annual operating budget and a growing endowment.
About the position
This is a leadership position responsible for setting and working toward long-term fundraising strategy, building deep donor relationships, and strengthening fundraising capacity. The Director of Development reports directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with senior staff and board trustees to ensure MOI has the philanthropic resources to meet ambitious goals to serve our community.
This role will build on a positive trend for the museum, which has enjoyed increasing fundraising success for the past several years. The successful candidate will lead a development team that includes a seasoned Director of Corporate Partnerships. The candidate will also have the opportunity to hire a support employee with complementary skills to advance fundraising strategies and goals.
Job functions
- Design and execute annual and multi-year fundraising strategies in accordance with MOI’s strategic vision
- Cultivate and steward meaningful relationships with current and prospective funders
- Solicit major gifts through in-person asks, proposals, and strategic outreach
- Oversee attentive donor stewardship, recognition, and reporting processes
- Set strategic fundraising goals for donors as well as additional revenue streams including grants and membership
- Expand planned/legacy giving opportunities (bequests, securities, etc.)
- Research and analyze giving trends and best practices and implement into fundraising strategy as appropriate
- Ensure donor data integrity and effective use of CRM and fundraising tools
- Prepare regular fundraising reports to monitor progress toward strategic goals
- Build organizational fundraising capacity by working closely with the executive team, pertinent staff, board members, and volunteers
- Support high-quality proposal development and grant management systems and coordinate with staff to match mission-driven projects with funding sources
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of recent professional experience working as a Director of Development or on a dedicated development team, preferably for a nonprofit
- 1+ year of experience managing others in a development setting
- 1+ year of experience using a donor database/CRM to track and analyze constituent data
- Experience making successful asks for various types of gifts, including major and minor gifts, recurring gifts, planned gifts, etc.
- Experience working with a team to execute a strategic fund development plan, including multiple sources of revenue, such as individual donors, corporate sponsors, and public and private grantors
- Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills, follow-through, proactivity, and attention to detail
- Bachelor’s degree
Compensation, schedule, and work conditions
- Starting salary: $80,000+
- Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance paid entirely by MOI, generous PTO and floating holidays, simple IRA with employer match, gym membership, etc.
- Schedule: 40 hour/week schedule, based around M-F 9-5 but with some flexibility and up to one day per week remote work. Some evening and weekend event work also expected.
