Summary of The Archives of Falconry

The Archives of Falconry (TAF) was initially conceived, developed, and supported by several visionary leaders and falconers within the Peregrine Fund. Since its inception, TAF has grown into a world-renowned repository of falconry material culture and historical records. The mission of The Archives is to collect, preserve, and interpret global falconry history, art, literature, and material culture.

Description

The Archive is offering a part-time or full-time internship that may last up to 16 weeks (depending on the successful candidate’s availability) that provides the candidate with experience in museum/archival collections management and digital asset management. The successful candidate will be part of an exciting project to bring a large collection of books, art, and material culture to a dynamic, publicly accessible online platform.

The Successful Candidate Will be Trained in the Following Tasks

● Handling and preserving collection material using best practices.

● Organizing, compiling, and quality checking/quality assuring collection records (including metadata).

● Entering compiled data and metadata into collections information management systems that adhere to established standards and guidelines.

● Assisting with photographing and scanning collection objects.

Time Commitment and Working Conditions

Scheduling is flexible, though showing up for 4-5 days a week (until the allotted 256 hours are reached) is expected. Interns will be guaranteed two 15 minute breaks throughout the day. The length of the lunch break (a minimum of 30 minutes) is flexible and can be discussed with the management team.

Work will largely be carried out indoors at various work stations. Due to our focus on digitization, work will largely be done on computers (Windows and MacOS). All necessary equipment and any museum software-related training for the internship will be provided on-site at TAF. Interns are not required to engage with the public, though they will be expected to regularly work with (or at least check in with) their fellows in the TAF management team. While the daily scheduling of tasks with the team will be flexible, the singular tasks themselves can last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks and may contain repetitive processes that require excellent organizational skills as well as acute and methodical attention to detail throughout their full durations.

The dress code is casual, but clothing choices should be made within reason. While plain T-shirts and sweatshirts are alright to wear with jeans or other long trousers/skirts, shorts and other articles of clothing that would not be considered appropriate in a professional environment are not. Many tasks also require the use of workstations in the Collections Room, which is always kept at a low temperature to best preserve the objects, so bringing a jacket is recommended even in the summer.

Skills and Background

The Archives of Falconry is seeking a hard-working, self-directed student currently enrolled in their junior or senior year of college or in graduate school for a related field. Preferred candidates are:

● Highly organized with strong attention to small details.

● Passionate about museums, archives, cultural heritage, the preservation of material culture or related interests.

●(Optionally, though not necessarily, since training will be provided on-site) Experienced in scanning archival material, creating metadata, working with image and video files, and handling fragile objects

Required Documentation and Application Deadline

Applicants should send an email with the following attachments: a current CV; contact information for 3 personal references; and a cover letter to Rosamund Żywicki, Curator of TAF’s Bibliotheca Falconaria, (at rosie.zywicki@falconry.org) by April 18th at 5:00pm MST (the latest date and time that applications will be accepted).
