Department Summary

The University of Oregon’s art museum, The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA), opened its doors to the public in 1933. Designed by Ellis F. Lawrence, UO Dean of Architecture & Allied Arts at the time, the museum was built to house the Murray Warner Collection of Oriental Art—more than 3,700 works of art given to the University of Oregon by Gertrude Bass Warner. After a major renovation and expansion, the museum reopened in 2005 at 70,000 square feet, twice the original size. Over 20,000 square feet are dedicated to museum exhibitions and related programs serving the academic university and community at large.

The only academic art museum in Oregon accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) features engaging exhibitions, significant collections of historic and contemporary art, and exciting educational programs that support the university’s academic mission and the diverse interests of its off-campus communities. The collection consists of 17,000+ works of art across all media with extensive holdings in Asian art (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), Pacific Northwest art, Russian icons, European and American modern and contemporary art, and growing strength in Latin American art. Special exhibitions galleries display works from the collection and works on loan, representing many cultures of the world, past and present. The JSMA continues a long tradition of bridging international cultures and offers a welcoming destination for discovery and education centered on artistic expression that deepens the appreciation and understanding of the human condition.

Position Summary

The Museum Facilities and Security Administrator (MFSA) is the senior on-site staff member responsible for overseeing daily operations related to facilities management and security at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA). Reporting to the JSMA Associate Director, the MFSA ensures a safe and welcoming environment for staff, students, faculty, and visitors, while protecting the museum's collections, including high-value artworks. This position supervises a team of five security officers, a facilities service coordinator, a custodian, and 15-25 student gallery monitors, while managing the scheduling and coordination of building operations, maintenance, and repair.

The MFSA is accountable for training, scheduling, and supervising all security and facilities staff to ensure the safety and comfort of museum visitors and the security of the museum’s collections during open hours and special events. Supervision of the security staff includes nationally accredited museum level protection security training, , establishing posts, post orders, and function of the control room. Responsibilities include overseeing control room operations, which involve monitoring alarms, CCTV surveillance, and electronic security systems, coordinating with the University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD), managing visitor access and key control, and dispatching staff as necessary. The MFSA takes a lead role in serving the museum’s students and visitors and making them feel safe and welcome during their time in the museum.

Ideal candidates will be familiar with and/or have experience with museum security technology, including CCTV systems, electronic alarms, the VESDA system, and electronic curtain alarms. The MFSA will take the lead in monitoring, reporting issues, and suggesting equipment upgrades for museum security systems.

This role is also responsible for managing the museum’s security and facilities budget, monitoring expenditures, and reporting any fiscal updates and irregularities. The MFSA provides input during budget planning, recommends adjustments, and closely collaborates with the Associate Director to optimize staffing, training, and resources to most effectively meet institutional goals. As the designated on-call contact for off-hours alarms and emergencies, flexibility in working shifts, including weekends, is essential.

This position is also responsible for the JSMA’s adherence to protection security and risk management protocols, policies and procedure standards and best practices as specified by our national accreditation organization, American Alliance of Museums (AAM). This position is the lead in the reaccreditation process for security and risk management and is responsible for keeping written policies and procedures updated and current for review by the AAM.

Special Requirements

• Adult CPR with First Aid and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification required within 60- days of employment.
• This position will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Driver’s Certification which is necessary for monitoring and site visits to the JSMA’s offsite storage facility Must have within 30 days of hire.
• Employment in this position is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. The background check may include, but is not limited to, verification of criminal history, education, employment history, and other relevant checks as applicable to the role. The results of this background check will be considered in determining employment eligibility.

Minimum Requirements

• Associate’s degree.
• Three years full-time experience working within a security program.
• One year supervisory experience managing, training, coaching and scheduling employees.

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with special event planning/management.
• Proven ability to effectively, continuously and discretely work with confidential and potentially sensitive information.
• Comfortable and proficient with a wide range of technology, including office support software and physical security systems. Knowledge of wireless and IP-based camera systems, data storage, camera management (i.e. Milestone), access control, visitor management, and other emergent security technology.
• Proven ability to effectively, continuously and discretely work with confidential and potentially sensitive information.
• Demonstrated written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree. Preference will be given to candidates possessing an art related, criminal justice or public administration Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree.
• Supervisory or leadership experience (i.e., field trainer, team leader, unit lead, etc.) with a security program in an accredited AAM (American Alliance of Museums) art museum, historic site, historic collection or artifact care program or similar security leadership experience.
• Experience in a higher education setting, working with students, faculty, staff and donors.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with art media, object care and/or other related background and/or training.
• Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) certification as Private Security Supervisory or Executive Manager.
