Job Summary
Our Mission
The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two facilities, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.
The Opportunity
The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a Social Media Specialist III to join the Museum’s Public Affairs department. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Public Affairs, the successful candidate will collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement digital communications strategies for Museum initiatives across the Getty’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn) on behalf of the Museum. This will involve working with various departments within the Museum to identify and help shape potential content for social media that engages our followers and helps build new audiences. Potential content would support the Museum’s exhibitions and public program offerings, the Museum’s varied collections, special conservation initiatives, and widespread education programs.
The Social Media Specialist III will also reach out to relevant community organizations to develop and coordinate social media trades and special collaborations with the shared goal of promoting one another’s offerings and/or sharing content. In partnership with the Getty Trust Communications team, the Social Media Specialist III will also assist on special social media influencer outreach efforts.
The ideal candidate should have a thorough knowledge of and comfort with various social media platforms, including an understanding of best practices and the various toolsets and features each platform offers. Ideally, the chosen candidate will also have proven experience with paid social media campaigns to help raise awareness of important Getty programs amongst targeted professional audiences. Under minimal supervision, the position will optimize content delivery strategies – helping build content topics, tailoring content to each platform, targeting specific audiences, and assisting with overall editorial decisions. The position will work closely with the social media team in the Getty Trust Communications department to conceive and implement digital community strategies on behalf of the Museum. The Social Media Specialist III should expect to work with the department’s Graduate Intern overseeing social media projects that are well-suited to their experience level.
