WMA 2011: PowerPoints from Collections: Planning for Remodels and New Spaces

Planning for a new collections space whether by remodeling or building a new space is complicated. Reconfiguring permanent and temporary collections spaces (storage, workrooms, processing, exhibits) requires a holistic approach and participation from collections, facilities, curatorial staff, and architects. What does the process include? How does one effectively communicate with non-museum staff? What makes a project successful? What are typical pitfalls? Independent professionals and museum collections staff discuss projects from institutions large and small.

The WMA 2011 session, Collections: Planning for Remodels and New Spaces addressed collections moves from three perspectives and points in planning. Moderated by Vicki Gambill from the Broad Art Foundation, the session began with an informal poll and the result that most, if not all attendees were planning a collections move sometime in the future. Paula Johnson then spoke on how to begin the process, what to do to get ready, and then how to move forward. Nicole Nathan followed with a case study of a move, how it happened, how long it took, and lessons learned. Steve Comba, currently in the process of moving into a new space at Pomona College Museum of Art, concluded with a real-time report of how his move is progressing.
