An Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. JANM is located in the historic Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, conveniently located at the Little Tokyo stop for the Metro light rail line A & E station.

The Gallery Attendant for the temporary exhibition, Aki’s Market provides Museum visitors with access to the technical and hands-on experiences connected to the exhibition. Experiences are located in the Weingart Gallery or other designated spaces. Oversees the use of Virtual Reality gallery experience for Aki’s Market. Sets up equipment, assist visitor and cleans equipment between use. Provides information to the visitor about the exhibition and helps maintain the exhibition. Requires flexible scheduling of hours and days of work, requires some evening and weekend hours with availability for approximately 12 to 18 hours a week. Must be available for two to three days per week: 11:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:00pm to 7:00pm Thursdays and 11:00am to 5:00pm Saturday and Sundays. Temporary position from August 2023 through January 28,2024.

Bachelor’s degree in art, museum studies or history preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum one year of experience in engaging visitors in a museum setting and/or experience in leading group tours in a museum setting.  Previous Gallery attendant experience is preferred. Demonstrated ability to show sensitivity to audiences with diverse backgrounds.  Experience in providing customer service in a public setting.  Demonstrate commitment and flexibility at all times in order to ensure high quality of service.  Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus. Has excellent communication and negotiation skills. Experience working with VR headsets, databases, Google Calendar and care use of equipment; experienced using IPad/smart phones preferred.
